Just the guy I wanted to talk to!

Totally unrelated to your amazingly clean desk, but I’m looking for CLT-area school opinions. We’re thinking about moving closer to my actual work, even though I’ll still be a remote employee most of the time . So basically I can choose anywhere in the CMS system or outlying areas (NC/SC). I have some guidance and opinions from coworkers, but curious to get an “insider’s” view on it.

It’s an important thing for educators, especially men!

I used to looove Combos as a kid.

I imagine I’d spit them out if I ate some now, but no idea.

I do know that Twinkies are nowhere as good as I remembered them.

tidy...term used loosely.

Hole puncher confetti all over desk. Staples loose on desk. Crap under desk.

Also, did you bribe a person who had combos or did you bribe them with combos?

I almost bought a bag of Combos on a whim, but then I checked the calories. I miss being young and having a metabolism.

I think “ peanut b utter” filled pretzels are still good (though my doctor would not be happy about the salt intake). I’m not sure I could handle the “cheese” in the cheese filled ones today. I never liked the pizza ones.

Oh yeah, I’m sure the PB ones are perfectly fine.

I was definitely thinking of the others.

I’m sure that Steve will have a properly informed opinion, but word that I hear is that Fort Mill, SC, is still the good public school system in the metro area, even though they are struggling with overcrowding. Generally CMS is not in good shape, particularly for high school where one must live in Myers Park or Providence zones for any quality, and those areas are pricey.

Good luck (I have no kids, so can only repeat information that I am told  in passing).

Title I schools in CMS are desperately understaffed and underfunded. Stay outside of the 485 loop, or try to get into southeast Charlotte. Or Matthews. Or the Mecklenburg side  of lake Norman if good schools are a concern.

Mooresville School district is one of the best in the state but it’s expensive to buy unless you want to live on the mill hill. Also the commute into Charlotte is garbage.

Stay away from charters except for Mallard Creek STEM. Most of them are shit.

Thank you, sir — based on everything heard so far, I’m basically looking at spots between Ft. Mill and Matthews, more or less . I don’t know much about the north side of town, but Mooresville looks like a high cost of entry :D

I won’t have to commute into town much, but when I do it’ll be Uptown or the southern 485 loop.

Thanks, I just replied to Steve — you are both saying stuff I’ve heard form several area coworkers, too. Sounds like everyone’s story checks out ;)

If we do it, we’ll probably end up somewhere along the state line between Ft. Mill and Matthews. I heard there are several other really good districts down around there.

One of my staff is a former high school teacher, and his wife is a current middle school teacher, and he is trying to decide his best strategy for his son in looking toward high school. I figure that he knows what he is talking about when it comes to CMS high schools.

Commuting from Matthews into Uptown is lengthy, with stop-and-go traffic at rush hour (along Independence/74) as is from Fort Mill into Uptown (along I-77). Not fun. either would be okay to and from Ballantyne along I-485, although still congested. Source: I occasionally have to drive all over at various times of day for work.

Thanks for the extra info — Uptown might just be a few times a year, Ballantyne maybe a few times a month, at most. Ideally I just want a semi-”self contained” area where we can do all of our schools, shopping, etc, without much concern for commute. I already have a couple of coworkers in Ft Mill and Rock Hill who almost never go to the office. I’ve heard 77 is pretty brutal, both north and south of town.

I never hear much about west, though -- I figured Gastonia (being as big as it is) must have something going for it. Maybe I’m biased because I’d rather live a little closer to the mountains...

Well, Steve may have a better and clearer opinion of the area west of Charlotte. Belmont has become a hotter place for people to move who commute to Uptown in the past couple of years. However, my impression is that the Gaston County schools are not good.

In addition, the area has retained a stuck-in-the-past reputation. Primarily because a lot of the textile industry that supported a larger population went away, so there is a lot of vacant or underutilized urban property (particularly in Gastonia) , although that is changing.

If you want a variety of quality restaurants, stores and other resources, they are harder to come by in Gaston and certainly Lincoln counties. If you want more property and/or “simpler” culture, then they become appealing.
